The Team

Princeton University Office of Advancement – Princeton, NJ
Designer: Gensler
Contractor: Princeton University Office of Design & Construction

The Background

Princeton University is a private Ivy League research university in Princeton, New Jersey. It is known for its history and integrity, ranking as the fourth oldest higher education institute in the United States. The Princeton University Office of Advancement supports Princeton’s position as a higher education leader through alumni engagement, communication, and annual giving.

The Challenge

As part of its 30-year plan, the University elected to move the Office of Advancement off campus to a satellite administrative building. In doing so, the administration knew they had the challenge to create an environment that would keep the Advancement staff connected to the campus’s vitality and rich history. To execute on the designer’s vision and deliver on the University’s ambitious timeline, DSS was tasked with the following challenges:

  • Coordinate graphic preparation between the university, designer, and production and review, evaluate and change materials as needed to achieve the desired aesthetic effect with finished graphics.
  • Update and adjust fabrication of the dimensional signage elements to accommodate the changes outlined above so they could be incorporated seamlessly into the graphic elements per the designer’s vision.
  • Coordinate access and off-hour installation of the entire package over the course of multiple weekends to avoid disturbing end users during the typical workday.
  • Each of these projects was expected to be completed over an expedited timeline.

The Solution

The Office of Design & Construction contacted DSS to execute the concept that incorporated dimensional sign elements with environmental graphic murals and wall panels throughout the office space. The graphic prep required multiple and novel printing methods, and the installation of all the aspects posed several physical challenges and a short and restricted timeline. DSS coordinated between stakeholders, designers, and fabricators and oversaw multiple mobilizations to deliver on the University’s ambitious goal.
